Commercial Commissions, A Brief History

Image making through illustration is just one form of my passion. I have designed things from couture jewelry for the body to directing art interventions in cities.  Art and styling ~ from re-imaging real people to music videos and to advertising campaigns ~ this has been my world for decades.
Welcome to it!

Take a brief tour here.

Style Rooted, Imagination on Wings. Our jewelry was chosen several times for British Vogue editorials and most recently a portrait of fashion icon, now movie star, Iris Apfel was commissioned by a friend as a gift for her.

We love making magic with golden materials. From a golden artisan pin etched in watery black ink to indicate its creation process to a golden bowl chosen by Aveda for its New York store displays, I am inventive and love creating original images from 2-D to 3-D...and beyond.

Body Beautiful Defined. One of my earliest commissions (while still in college!) was a brochure for a hair salon/day spa to illustrate their services.

Oh The Eighties!  Also while still in college, I was hired by a trim manufacturer to illustrate their trims on imagined garments as one of their selling tools.  I still love these for their stylistic exploration ~ wild 1980's hair and power shoulders!

From catalog backdrops to Vogue magazine. Quite a leap, eh? I was commissioned by David's Bridal, a major prom and bridesmaid dress company, to create butterfly backdrops for their Spring catalog.  The earrings here in this Vogue spread were called Terrepathy, looking like a path of stones, but made from lightweight felt and plaster.  As a shamanic-ish nature girl, I always had a dream of creating things from actual earth to be worn with couture dresses. That dream came true!

International Magazines and Couture Runways. The necklace on Helena Christensen as shot by Peter Lindbergh for British Vogue was designed by myself and partner Mare McClellan for our jewelry collection, JAMP.  We were commissioned by designer Bill Blass to create this sheer silk scarf with silver beads running through it for his runway collection. The scarf was part of our collection and was photographed for a full page in Accessories magazine.  Did I mention we also were commissioned by legendary designers Oscar de la Renta, Mary McFadden and sold to major stores from Japan to Paris to LA and then some? Happily, we were.

Clothing and Costumes. We designed and painted costumes for Kinematic dance company which were featured on a half-page article in The New York Times and Elle magazine. On the right, our T-shirt with bandana circles on a model during the filming of a spec video for Puma with director, little marvin, pictured here.  This shirt is the inspiration for our Saraswati Mountain Miss illustration, here.

Botanical Babes and Art Nouveau-ish Tendrils for Catalogs and Logos. This catalog cover for clothing company Blue Fish and this logo for Kingston Flower Company both drew upon my Viennese ancestral roots, love for Jugendstil, and nature.

Nature and Flowers...Again! We were hired to style a photo shoot on elemental-themed fabrics for the influential trade magazine Sportswear International and a New York Times advertising campaign for Passiflora, a floral and events design company.

Creative Collaboration with The Brightest. Creative Director, little marvin is the bright star at HSN, the Home Shopping Network and one of my greatest inspirations! We transformed his military jacket into the golden splendor he imagined for his Make Love War art opening and his WOW shirt, seen here on him, seaside in Monaco.

Video Style.  Commissioned by celebrity event planner, Matthew David Hopkins, we styled this promotional video, D-Zine A-Z, from sets to actors, in collaboration with director little marvin. Meow! We styled international dance pop singer, Consuelo Vanderbilt Costin in silver leather and a special layered necklace for her Here We Go video.

By Hand and By Pen, in Color and Collage.  From drawing to fabric selection and samples, on the left are my prototype T-shirt and logo design for little marvin loves you.  On the right, our sketch collage to illustrate a bespoke perfume pop-up shop for Master Perfumer, Maria McElroy of AromaM, the Brooklyn-based indie perfume atelier.

Award-Winning Landscape Art.  We like to create interactive creative experiences in the landscape to connect people to nature.  On the left, the owner of the unplugged, organic resort Fazenda Catucaba, set in thousands of acres in Brazil, asked us for artist introductions to create art installations in the landscape.  We introduced the artist Pasha to owner and the rest was history...and award winning!  Pasha's series of gates entitled, Portal do Sul was a 2014 CODAaward winner and has received international press coverage.

Also receiving international press was our commission from the City of Milan, Italy, via Amazelab, for its Green Island satellite design fair during Salone Milano, the international design fair.  Green Provocateur was a staircase to the Garibaldi Train Station that was transformed overnight into a lush green forest, surprising morning commuters.
