Once upon a time, a very elegant white haired woman named Ilene Beckerman wrote a tiny book 'late in life' called Love, Loss, and What I Wore, which in turn, inspired a successful Off-Broadway play by Nora and Delia Ephron performed on six continents.
I met Ilene soon after she first published her little book in the 1990's. As the marketing director for Blue Fish, one of the first organic cotton clothing companies, we invited her to be a guest speaker at an evening cocktail event.
"It is not about fashion; it is about what clothes really are to us, those moments when we are constantly trying to find our identity through them," said Nora Ephron, who wrote the introduction to the book.
Flash forward to 2014.
6 pm desk-quitting bell rings, I am shopping my closet for something to wear to an event. Suddenly I realized I have been buying the same pale pink skirt for over 20 years since I was in high school. ( stop calculating, it may be 10,000 years, who really cares! )
I saw the little timeline of pink skirts in my imagination and drew them, along with their key moments and had second 'Aha!' recalling my meeting Ilene and her little book that went from a little cocktail soiree to being seen around the world.
Every girl who wears a pink skirt has the exact same wishes for her dreams and feelings. That her laughter be heard, that she gets to dance with joy, and not be lost.
